Barbados Under 16 Netball Team suffered its second defeat of the tournament at the hands of Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday evening in the Caribbean Netball Association Under 16 Jean Pierre Championship at the YMCA in St. John’s Antigua.
A keenly contested encounter, the Bajan girls trailed 8-9 in the first interval, went ahead 14-13 at half time but collapsed in the third quarter, 18-24 and never recovered, Trinidad winning by a clear 10 goals margin 32-22.
Barbados returned to its original starting line up of Shannon Hackett (GS), Rhea Holder (GA), Crystal Brathwaite (WA), Danissa Foster (C), Shakola Herbert (WD), Jeneice Clarke (GD) and Markayla Yearwood (GK) against Trinidad’s Samantha Wallace (GS), Shatelle Small (GA), Sashelle Small (WA), Abisha Collins (C ), Amanda Cameron (WD), Jellene Richardson (GD) and Latoya Thomas (GK).
The girls started with purpose and looked good, both teams matched equally in skill. Barbados’ mid court players again dominated the opposition, however, the breakdown came in the execution of the delivery passes to the shooting circle. Although Shannon Hackett looked better in the first half of this game she made life difficult for the passers as she was again guilty, on occasion, of lowering her slender frame, moving out of position and being caught in a poor position behind the defence.
She gave her team two good quarters but lost her shooting form in the the third converting only 3 of her 7 attempts in this quarter to finish with 17 of 27 in the game. Partner Rhea Holder again had a solid performance contributing 5 of 9.
The captain Jeneice Clarke was again the most dominant player on the court. Having a good tournament she has been let down by her attacking squad. Markayla Yearwood was not effective in this game and Clarke did double duty, falling back into the circle to help mark Trinidad’s goal shooter Samantha Wallace, who shot 24 of 29 on the night. Her goal attack partner Shatelle Small scored 8 of 14.
Both teams made one substitution in the last quarter, coach Julie Phillips of Barbados opted for a new centre in Shanisha Evelyn while Trinidad introduced a new wing attack Avielle Cooper to increase their production into the circle in the third quarter which proved very effective.
Barbados best position in the tournament at this point is fourth because the odds are against them for winning against Jamaica in the final game on Friday. Trinidad comes up against Jamaica on Thursday in the unofficial finals since both of these teams are unbeaten thus far.
In other matches, Jamaica blanked St. Lucia 46-12, Antigua and Barbuda won their first game 25-15 over Dominica and St. Vincent easily defeated Grenada 31 – 10.
