Deborah Lynch-Theobalds and Chris Burton on the New Extra Time Rule

By Deborah Lynch-Theobalds

At the recently discussed changes to the rules in New Zealand, there were two versions as to how a tied game should be handled.

Former Text

Rule 11.14.2
In the event of a tie in the quarter finals, semi-finals and final

(a) there shall be a two minute interval at the end of full-time.
(b) extra time of two (2) x seven (7) minute halves each way will be played
(c) teams change ends and the game is restarted by the team entitled to the next centre pass
(d) teams change ends at half time without an interval
(e) the centre pass is taken by the team entitled to the next centre pass
(f) in the event of a tie remaining at the end of extra time, play will continue until one team has a two (2) goal advantage

Adopted Text

Procedure for extra time where a winner is required:
(i) There shall be a two (2) minute interval at the end of full time. Substitutions and/or team changes are permitted;
(ii) Extra time of two halves of seven (7) minutes each shall be played. Teams change ends at half time without an interval. No substitutions and/or team changes are permitted. The Centre Pass is taken by the team entitled to the next Centre Pass;
(iii) In the event of a tie remaining at the end of extra time, a visual signal shall be used to indicate that play shall continue until one team has a two (2) goal advantage.

As can be seen from the above, the former text stated that the teams change ends at the end of the interval whereas the adopted text was silent on it. After seeking clarification from Chris Burton, a member of the rules Board, she indicated that teams change ends (see response below).

Burton’s reply: “They do change but we haven't put it in that section (perhaps not smart). Your cross reference is 2.1 .......teams change ends at each quarter and this is an extra 'quarter'. Similarly, as an extra quarter, once in extra time it must follow that there can be 1 up to 2 minute injury time....because together, the 2 7s make an extra quarter ...or near enough.”

Please take note that the 14 mins extra time is treated as if it were a quarter and as such only one injury time of up to two minutes is allowed during the 14 mins, all other injuries will be up to 30 secs etc.

Jamaica

Congratulations to Jamaica for retaining the U16 CNA Jean Pierre Netball Crown. The team looked strong from the opening match and none of the other teams, although competitive, presented any real treat to the Jamaicans.

The centre court players were sharp and their skill level belied their tender age. The defenses were alert and effective, and in the shooting circle when 6ft 9ins Marvadene Anderson was on court, there was clearly no contest. She was started in all the games, by the time the opposition was morally defeated a regular height shooter was introduced, but by this time the damage was done.

The champions had the best goal average in the competition 305 goals for and 94 against. This also earned them the best defending team trophy. Deneen Taylor had the third highest individual score in the shooting competition. Five Jamaicans were listed in the top sixteen players: Anderson, Ashley Henry, Deneen Taylor, Samantha White and Vangelene Williams. Samantha White was also named as Jamaica's Most Valuable Player.

The Team
Marvadene Anderson, Deneen Taylor, Samantha White, Shantel Campbell, Sharesha Richards, Vangelee Williams, Ashley Henry, Britney Bent, Shanice Lee, Shanique Miller, Candice Bryan

Trinidad and Tobago

First Runners Up in the 2008 CNA Jean Pierre U16 Tournament, Trinidad and Tobago, have a lot to smile about. There were flawless up to the Jamaica match in which their bodies were on the court, but the competitive spirit which was present in the other matches was absent.

Be that as it may, the Trinis were tough cookies. Their heavy set goal keeper, Latoya Thomas, although not very mobile was able to off set the competition with her wrestler type play. In fact, it was as a result of her wrestling match with Jamaica's 6ft 9ins shooter, Marvadene Anderson, that the shooter was exposed to what appeared to be her first toss up. That was a moment worth catching on tape.

Centre, Aeisha Collins was judged the Most Valuable player on the Trinidad team. She however did not make it on the top 16 Players in the tournament list. This honour went to Jellene Richardson, Shantelle Small and Samantha Wallace. Wallace also had the highest score in the shooting competition 51 of 65, and the team placed 2nd to in that competition.

Trinidad again took home the Best Team on Parade trophy which was donated by the Trinidad Netball Association and were also the Best Uniform team. This trophy was donated by Her Excellency Lady Williams of Grenada. Special mention was also made of them in the Best Team Spirit category.

The Team
Samantha Wallace, Shantelle Small, Sashelle Small, Aeisha Collins, Amanda Cameron, Jellene Richardson, Latoya Thomas

St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Congratulations to the St. Vincent and the Grenadines team for a well deserved 3rd place finish in the CNA Jean Pierre U16 Tournament 2008.

The Vincie girls played well especially lanky goal shooter Mary -Ann Frederick and high jumping goal keeper Tonique Bowen.

Bowen demonstrated her jumping ability especially in the Jamaica match where she picked a number of the high flying lobs intended for Jamaica's 6ft 9in giant Marvadene Anderson. She was rewarded for her efforts as she was adjudged the Most Valuable Player on the St. Vincent Team.

Mary-Ann Federick topped the top ten shooting list for accuracy with 86.71% after 7 games and her team placed 3rd in the shooting competition. The Team was judge the Most Accurate Shooting team with 189 goals scored from 236 attempts in the competition.

Four of the St. Vincent players were listed in the top sixteen players of the competition - Tonique Bowen, Mary-Ann Federick, Sheldene Joseph and Ruth-Ann Williams.

The Team
Mary Ann Federick, Kimesha Antoine, Sheldene Joseph, Ruth Ann Williams, Kerronna Samuel, Sherika Barker, Tonique Bowen, Latieke Nyoka Jackson and Shanice Daniel

Barbados

Barbados was probably the most disappointed team at the end of the CNA Jean Pierre U16 competition which just concluded in St. John's Antigua.

Dropping in ranking from 2nd to 4th position overall the Bajan girls showed glimpses of brilliance but were not able to sustain their form against Jamaica, Trinidad nor St. Vincent and the Grenadines, falling down badly in their shooting area.

The shooters were the most inexperience and youngest members of the team and will therefore have the opportunity to redeem themselves next year.

Determined not to go home empty handed they won the shooting competition and Shannon Hackett won the most accurate shooter trophy. Barbados also had three of their shooters in the top ten. Tonisha Rock-Yaw was 2nd overall (80.49%), Shannon Hackett - 5th (77.12%) and Rieah Holder 8th (71.88%). Shannon Hackett placed 2nd in terms of the highest score in the competition, 47 of 56.

Captain Jeniece Clarke was the Most Valuable player. The 16 year old had an outstanding tournament and was arguably the best defensive player in the competition.

Barbados was awarded the Platinum Award in the Performance Incentive Programme and three of its players were listed in the top sixteen Players of the Tournament - Jeneice Clarke, Danissa Foster and Shakola Herbert.

The Team
(Back) Marissa Burgess, Tonisha Rock-Yaw, Shannon Hackett
(Middle)Shakola Herbert, Jeneice Clarke, Crystal Brathwaite, Shanice Rock, Shanice Jarvis
(Front) Shaneisha Evelyn, Donnisa Foster, Markala Yearwood, Reiah Holder,

St. Lucia

The St. Lucia U16 team was the live wire of the 2008 CNA Jean Pierre Tournament. From the candle lighting ceremony to the closing ceremony, the St. Lucians exhibited an out going spirit that was easy to fall in love with.

The exuberant team was third in the Most Improved Team Category and placed 5th overall in the competition.

Thirteen year old centre, Amber Ambrose was adjudged the Most Valuable Player on the team. She placed 4th overall in the shooting ranking with an accuracy rate of 78.48%.

Jo Ann Anderson won the special Young Achiever's Trophy for excellence in academic, extra - curricular and sporting activities which was donated by Ms. Kathy Harper-Hall, President of the CNA.

Grenada

Grenada played well in all their games easily defeating host Antigua but lost steam in their final game against Dominica which would have given them two victories and a safe 6th position.

They however were still able to hold on to 6th place as a result of a superior goal average.

Everyone were happy to see Grenada participating and doing well. All of the Caribbean is routing for this country's full recover from Hurricane Ivan which has set them back a couple years economically.

The youngest player in the competition Nichell Noel hails from Grenada. Goal attack Clopatra Cato were their most valuable player. Among their awards was a Silver in the Performance Incentive Programme, Most Discipline Team, Best Team Spirit, 2nd place Best Team on Parade and 2nd place Most Improved Team.

Players
Cecile Roberts, Cleopatra Cato, Renee Cooper, Terrian Julien, Renee Plenty, Zandra Sylvester, Shirmarly Peter, Nichell Noel, Tamara

Dominica

Dominica won their final game in a bottom of the table upset against Grenada. This elevated them to 7th place overall having trailed in last place for the majority of the competition.

The Dominicans although not officially winning the most discipline team in the competition was in the estimation of the umpires the most discipline team.

They were 2nd in the area of Best Team Spirit and were adjudged the Most Improve Team in the competition. Goal Keeper Omean Charles was named as the Most Valuable Player. Shooter Andrea Remy finished in the 10 shooters. She was 7th overall with 72.29% accuracy.

Barbados/Jamaica

St. John’s Antigua/Friday April 11, 2008/Pamala Proverbs

Barbados U16 netballers moved down two notches in rank to place 4th overall in the Caribbean Netball Association Jean Pierre Under 16 competition which concluded on Friday night at the YMCA, St. Johns Antigua.

Handsomely defeated 43-19 by powerhouse Jamaica, who were unbeaten in the tournament, the Bajans however showed some grit but were clearly outclassed by a very skilled Jamaican side. The interval scores were 9-5, 17-7 and 33-14 all in Jamaica’s favour.

Jamaica’s major weapon in the competition has been the 6ft 9ins goal shooter Marvadene Anderson who has been virtually impossible to mark since the average height of the defences in the competition is about 5ft 8ins. While the top teams have been able to match them in open court, there has been virtually no contest in the shooting circle.

The most effective defence against Anderson was St. Vincent and the Grenadine’s high jumping goal keeper Tonique Bowen who was one of the most effective keepers in the tournament. St. Vincent were able to limit Jamaica to their lowest score of the competition 34 to their 19 (19 being the highest number of goals scored against Jamaica’s very defensive side).

On the night Barbados’ starting line up was Shannon Hackett (GS), Rieah Holder (GA), Crystal Brathwaite (WA), Danissa Foster (C ), Shakola Herbert (WD), Jeneice Clarke (GD) and Markayla Yearwood (GK) to Jamaica’s Marvadean Anderson (GS), Deneen Taylor (GA), Samantha Whyte (WA), Shantel Campbell (C ), Sharesha Richards (WD), Vangelee Williams (GD), and Ashley Henry (GK).

Barbados started well, at one stage the scores were as close as 5-6 (Jamaica) which got the spectators involved in the game from early. Their attacking woe, feeding the ball to shooters again raised its ugly head and Jamaica was able to build an unbeatable momentum.
At half time Shaneisha Evelyn (C ) and Shanice Jarvis (WA) were introduced to the game. Evelyn had an excellent final half directing her team’s attack, and getting the better of Jamaica’s very defensive centre Shantel Campbell.

Her spunk helped her team to hold possession of the ball for long periods even although they were restricted in the goal circle. This contributed to Jamaica having just 11 attempts to Barbados’ 6 in the final quarter. A contributor to this was also the fact that Jamaica introduced a regular height shooter in Alana Chambers into the game in the final quarter.

Barbados’ captain Jeneice Clarke arguably the best goal defence in the competition was again in top form. She made her presence felt on court against another top player in Jamaica’s goal attack Deneen Taylor who scored 14 of 16. Goal shooter Marvadene Anderson scored 22 of 29 before she left the game and substitute Taylor made good 7 of 8.

The Barbadian shooters were totally outclassed, the two who are both under fifteens will have a change to learn from this competition and come again next year. Although their performance was not very strong on court they demonstrated their shooting class winning the shooting competition the day before and Hackett was judged the most accurate shooter in that competition.

Against Jamaica she was limited to 18 attempts of which she scored 12 and Rieah Holder contributed 7 of 8.

In other games Trinidad and Tobago ensured a second place finish in the competition defeating Antigua and Barbuda 38-13, St. Vincent finished third defeating St. Lucia 27 to 21 and Dominica defeated Grenada 29-18 in the bottom of the table game, to record their first victory of the tournament.

Barbados/Dominica and Thursday Round UP

St. John’s Antigua/Thursday, April 10, 2008/Pamala Proverbs

Barbados U16 netballers chalked up another victory on Thursday night at the YMCA in Antigua easily defeating Dominica 34-19 in the penultimate game of the Caribbean Netball Association Jean Pierre Youth U16 Championships.

The game that held the attention however was Jamaica versus Trinidad and Tobago which was the tournament decider. Jamaica comprehensively defeated the Trinidadians 46-18 in a game that did not live up to its billing since Jamaica was able to dominate all areas of the court making it difficult for the Trinidadians to get into the game.

Earlier in the day Barbados placed first in the shooting competition,
Trinidad and Tobago were second and St. Vincent third. Goal shooter Shannon Hackett of Barbados had the best overall shooting average and is currently in 5th position overall in the competition in terms of shooting accuracy. Tonisha Rock-Yaw also of Barbados is in fourth but her numbers 33 of 41 are way below that of Hackett’s who scored 106 of 135. St. Vincent and the Grenadine’s Mary-Ann Frederick is in 1st place, Trinidadian Samantha Wallace, 2nd and St. Lucian Jaimie Ambrose is third.

In Barbados’ game against Dominica, they opted to start with - Shannon Hackett (GS), Rieah Holder (GA), Marisa Burgess (WA), Danisssa Foster (C ), Shakola Herbert (WD), Jeneice Clarke (GD), and Shanice Rock (GK) against Dominica’s Andrea Remy (GS), Melissa Williams (GA), Zoreah Telemacque (WA), Kendra Corbette (C ), Alicia Thomas (WD), Kishma Elizee (GD) and Omean Charles (GK).

The Bajans started strong, at one stage holding Dominica to 10-0 in the first quarter. The scores at the intervals were 11-1, 21-5 and 27-12. The team however, as in other games, faded in the third quarter even against this weak opposition, scoring just 6 goals in the interval.

The centre court and defences again dominated. The ball movement was faultless but again the team struggled in the goal circle. This time the errors were not caused by any pressure from the opposition but by inexperience and poor techniques by the players.

In the third quarter coach Julie Phillips introduced Tonisha Rock-Yaw (GA) and Shaneisha Evelyn (C ) to the game. Rock Yaw scored 5 of 6, while Rieah Holder scored 6 of 6 before she exited the game. Shannon Hackett made good 23 of her 29 attempts.

Dominica also tried three shooters. Andrea Remy scored 12 of 15 before she was replaced by Hethlyn Benjamin who contributed 7 of 8. Goal attack Melissa Williams was goalless.

In other games St. Lucia defeated Grenada 24 – 15 and St. Vincent and Grenadines limited host Antigua and Barbuda to just 5 goals to their 36.

Jamaica Celebrates

St. John’s Antigua/Thursday April 10

Jamaica easily dispatched Trinidad and Tobago 46-18 to take the CNA Jean Pierre U16 title. With one game left today against Barbados it is statistically impossible for any team to go ahead of Jamaica even if Barbados was granted a miracle victory.

The game which decided the championship did not live up to its billing. The Trinidadians never showed in this game and were behind from the first quarter, the scores at the intervals - 4-11, 9-21, 14-32.

Barbados/Antigua

St. John’s Antigua/Wednesday, April 9, 2008/Pamala Proverbs

Barbados easily dispatched host Antigua and Barbuda 34 – 13 on Wednesday night in the Caribbean Netball Association Jean Pierre Youth U16 Championships.

The Bajans had a firm grip at all the intervals 10-3, 18-7, 23-12, to win by a comfortable 21 goals margin.

Coach Julie Phillips chose as her starting side - Shannon Hackett (GS), Rhea Holder (GA), Shanise Jarvis (WA), Shaneisha Evelyn (C ), Shakola Herbert (WD), Jeneice Clarke (GD), and Markayla Yearwood (GK) against Antigua’s Akeila Davis (GS), Sheneka Williams (GA), Tenesha Williams (WA), Kristel King (C ), Termora Bartley (WD), Keshorna Aubrey (GD) and Sasha Gay-Middleton (GK).

Although Barbados comfortably dominated the mid-court and defensive areas, moving the ball easily from one end of the court to the other, they however lost their fluidity at the goal circle. Shanise Jarvis was guilty of a number of wayward passes and received two warnings from Jamaican umpire Dave Brown.

Shannon Hackett made every attempt to vary her game, and shot confidently against the goal keeper Sasha Gay-Middleton for her 26 of 29 goals. Goal attack Rhea Holder, showing signs of tiring at this point in the tournament contributed 4 of 7 before she was substituted in the final quarter for Tonisha Rock-Yaw who scored 2 of 4.

The defences were all over the Antiguans. The captain, Jeneice Clarke continued to be outstanding and was supported beautifully by Markayla Yearwood and Shakola Herbert. She allowed goal attack Shemeka Williams just 8 attempts of which she scored 5 while the goal shooter Akeila Davis was limited to scoring 8 of 14.

In other games St. Lucia beat Dominica 26 – 18, Jamaica continue their title hunt defeating St. Vincent 34- 19 and Trinidad dispatched Grenada 44-12.
