Barbados VS Grenada

St. John’s Antigua/Tuesday April 6, 2008/Pamala Proverbs

Barbados narrowly escaped the biggest upset of the Caribbean Netball Association Jean Pierre Under 16 Youth Championship defeating Grenada by a paltry 25 of 21.
With heads hang low, the Bajans girls who all appear to be still wallowing in the previous game defeat against St. Vincent look disorganise and demotivated.

Coach Julie Phillips opted to start with a new line up which worked against the Bajans as the combination of Tonisha Rock Yaw (GS), Rhea Holder (GA), Marisa Burgess (WA), Danissa Foster (C ), Shanice Rock (WD), Jeneice Clarke (GD) and Markayla Yearwood (GK) did not gel and they were only able to get 6 goals to Grenada’s 3.

More changes in the centre court, Shaneisha Evelyn entered at centre and Shanise Jarvis at wing attack, and further on court folly was to follow in the second quarter although the team extended the lead by two goals, the half time score crawling to 15-10.

The team reached an all time low in the third quarter just managing two gaols one from each shooter after the allotted ten minutes. Rock-Yaw exited the game at the end of this quarter scoring 13 of 18.

This made way for the re-entry of Shannon Hackett at the goal shooter position. Showing some grit she re-established a dominate shooter for the team contributing a timely 7 of 9 goals. Rhea Holder did yeoman service at gaol attack contributing 5 of 7 goals. Grenada played the same shooters throughout. Cecil Roberts scored a comfortable 19 of 33 while goal attack contributed 5 of 16. In the end it was Grenada’s inaccuracy that aided Barbados’ victory since their shooters had a whopping 49 attempts to Barbados’ 34.

In other games St. Vincent built on their victory against Barbados easily defeating Dominica 37-11. Trinidad trounced St. Lucia 36-9 and Jamaica white wash host Antigua and Barbuda 45 to 6.
