Barbados easily dispatched host Antigua and Barbuda 34 – 13 on Wednesday night in the Caribbean Netball Association Jean Pierre Youth U16 Championships.
The Bajans had a firm grip at all the intervals 10-3, 18-7, 23-12, to win by a comfortable 21 goals margin.
Coach Julie Phillips chose as her starting side - Shannon Hackett (GS), Rhea Holder (GA), Shanise Jarvis (WA), Shaneisha Evelyn (C ), Shakola Herbert (WD), Jeneice Clarke (GD), and Markayla Yearwood (GK) against Antigua’s Akeila Davis (GS), Sheneka Williams (GA), Tenesha Williams (WA), Kristel King (C ), Termora Bartley (WD), Keshorna Aubrey (GD) and Sasha Gay-Middleton (GK).
Although Barbados comfortably dominated the mid-court and defensive areas, moving the ball easily from one end of the court to the other, they however lost their fluidity at the goal circle. Shanise Jarvis was guilty of a number of wayward passes and received two warnings from Jamaican umpire Dave Brown.
Shannon Hackett made every attempt to vary her game, and shot confidently against the goal keeper Sasha Gay-Middleton for her 26 of 29 goals. Goal attack Rhea Holder, showing signs of tiring at this point in the tournament contributed 4 of 7 before she was substituted in the final quarter for Tonisha Rock-Yaw who scored 2 of 4.
The defences were all over the Antiguans. The captain, Jeneice Clarke continued to be outstanding and was supported beautifully by Markayla Yearwood and Shakola Herbert. She allowed goal attack Shemeka Williams just 8 attempts of which she scored 5 while the goal shooter Akeila Davis was limited to scoring 8 of 14.
In other games St. Lucia beat Dominica 26 – 18, Jamaica continue their title hunt defeating St. Vincent 34- 19 and Trinidad dispatched Grenada 44-12.
